Caring for Our Silver Jewelry

CARING SILVER

Caring for your Deafmetals

Now this might sound a little odd, but the best way to preserve your sterling silver Deafmetals is by keeping them freshly sealed in a reusable bag or airtight container. Silver tarnishes by exposure to air and moisture and sun, so a cool, dark place will always be highly recommended.

To clean, use a soft polishing cloth, and a special jewelry cleaning solution that can be purchased online or from your local jeweler. Silver hates harsh chemicals, so spray your hair and perfume before donning your jewels (your hearing devices would agree on this too!)

Also keep your Deafmetals separated to avoid them tangling their chains and suffering scratches when nobody's looking.

But. If you, like our designer, prefer your own jewelry to have a darkened, aged and lived-in look, and treat untangling chains as a form of meditation… completely ignore all the advice given above.

Most importantly, love and enjoy your Deafmetals (and they'll feel cared for).

Caring for the Planet

Recycling silver loses nothing of its strength or beauty or purity… the only difference lies in sustainability. It’s called ‘Eco-friendly silver’ because by using recycled silver rather than mining it anew, we can drastically reduce pollution, cut CO2 emissions by two thirds and use up to 95% less energy. We lessen environmental impacts like deforestation and erosion and the poisoning of homes and natural habitats. We address climate change through ethical business practices.

All of our Deafmetal chains are made of 100% recycled silver. In the rest of our jewelry parts, almost 70% of the silver is recycled and the procedure for obtaining our Responsible Jewellery Council membership is underway. Deafmetal complies with the quality standards imposed by European directives which prohibit the use of nickel in the manufacture of silver items.

Deafmetals contain silver parts which are bought ready-made from Italy, Germany and France, and only from companies we know are committed to upholding human, animal and environmental rights.

Some of our Deafmetal jewelry, like the DM Statement Crosses and Ankh pendants, are made from our very own left-over silvers. We send them to a silver foundry located in Kirkkonummi, Finland, where they melt down the old parts and create them into new shapes based on any of our crazy wishes.

What does electroplating mean?

The fine gilding operation involves depositing layers of gold onto silver, while rhodium is used to treat the surface of the silver. These two processes make it possible to slow down tarnishing and oxidation while achieving your desired color.

After polishing, a layer of precious metal is deposited onto the jewelry by electrolysis.

The jewelry itself is soaked in a bath with the metal particles. We then pass through electricity, allowing the layer of metal to be bonded to the jewelry. The metals that are used are: yellow gold, rose gold, white rhodium and black rhodium.

What does ‘rhodinated’ mean?

We are in the process of ensuring that all our sterling silver jewelry will from now on be rhodium-plated, or rhodinated.

Rhodium is a hard metal, and will therefore make the surface of the sterling silver more resistant to scratches or tarnishing, enhancing the appearance and durability of your Deafmetals.

Rhodium ensures our sterling silver jewelry is still nickel-free and hypoallergenic, and recommended for sensitive skin.
